At Level I, we studied Tie Gun where distance
was a factor within our control. Here, at Level II, we will be
studying the defensive aspects in which we do not have control
over the proximity of our opponent: that is to say, when the
attack begins inside our third perimeter. Ideally, we want to
keep our opponent at or outside our first horizontal perimeter.
Unfortunately that may not always be the case, so we must study
defensive techniques which address this very critical proximity.
Guge Gongji was published in book form by Paladin Press in 1991 and was one of Master Long’s best sellers. Advanced Guge Gongji, the DVD, is based upon the original text teaching whose practicality and simple logic are brought to visual clarity as Master Long analyzes each target with anatomical models to enhance the viewers understanding of the seven simple and compound joints focused upon in the study. Following these analyses, he goes on to demonstrate numerous techniques and variations for attacking these areas to stop an opponent’s assault. The substance of the Guge Gongji study, the principle behind it is to attack and break down an opponent’s locomotion, i.e., his ability to move his arms or legs or both effectively. The human body relies upon muscles pulling bones in a given direction to initiate movement. Bones are flexible at and held in place by joints of various types. Joints provide support for the bones which comprise the appendicular skeleton (arms and legs). When joints are broken or dislocated the bones will not follow their directed path because they are then without support. In Guge Gongji, the defensive counterattacks are directed at damaging joints which neutralizes the opponent’s ability to control the corresponding limbs and continue with his attack.
